Fast-forward to the late 17th century, and clear glass started to become more widely available. This was created using a process called ‘spinning’ but the size of clear glass was limited to 6”x6”. A complete window, for example, would have held multiple pieces that were held together by H-section lead strips.

Then, during the reign of George III, trends evolved and cast metal sashes had acquired universal appeal.

During the art deco period in the early 20th century, The UK became the largest manufacturer of steel windows and started to play a pivotal role in revolutionising the worldwide use of metal windows. To this day, they are still a market leader in this space.

Upgrading Windows and Doors Today

If your period property requires new metal windows, you essentially have two options: steel or thermal break aluminium.

Steel replacements have the advantage of looking identical to the original specification, and may be the only option in conservation areas.

Aluminium, on the other hand, looks very similar to steel and has a thermal break built into the frames, which means that they’re much better at heat retention compared to steel. The Smart Aluminium System is one of the most popular steel replacement options.
